What you need
- An iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 17 or later.
- Sleep data recorded in Apple Health. An Apple Watch with sleep tracking enabled is the intended data source.
- Read access to Sleep Analysis granted when Somnus asks.
If no sleep data appears
- Open Apple Health and confirm that a recent night appears under Sleep.
- Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Somnus and allow access to Sleep.
- Return to Somnus and pull down on the Dashboard to refresh.
- If your watch has only just synced, allow Apple Health to finish updating and try again.
Somnus deliberately ignores records that contain only “in bed” time and no recorded sleep. This prevents an incomplete record from creating a false score or phantom debt.
Understanding sleep debt
How is debt calculated?
For each tracked night, Somnus subtracts your recorded sleep from your configured Target Sleep and counts only the shortfall. Those nightly shortfalls are summed for the selected period.
Why can I have debt after a good night?
A strong score describes that night. Debt describes accumulated shortfall across several nights. A good night does not erase the fact that earlier nights fell below your target.
Do missing nights count as a full night of debt?
No. A night with no recorded sleep is excluded. Somnus also combines fragmented sleep sessions that belong to the same night before calculating the shortfall.
What does “behind goal” mean?
It is the signed balance between total recorded sleep and your target across tracked nights in the selected period. Nights above target can offset nights below target in this balance.
Understanding the Sleep Score
The Somnus Sleep Score is an educational wellness estimate from 0 to 100. It summarizes the tracked nights in the period being viewed; it is not a clinical measurement or diagnosis.
- Duration (35%) compares average recorded sleep with an 8-hour reference.
- Efficiency (25%) compares recorded time asleep with the elapsed bedtime-to-wake span.
- Consistency (20%) uses the variation in recorded bedtimes.
- Sleep stages (20%) compares Deep and REM proportions with reference proportions of 20% Deep and 25% REM.
Somnus uses records already present in Apple Health and does not independently measure sleep. Consumer sleep tracking and stage estimates are imperfect, so treat the score as context for your own patterns rather than medical advice.
Targets and time periods
Open Settings in Somnus to change:
- Target Sleep, used to calculate nightly debt and running balance.
- Minimum Acceptable, used for target-rate statistics and chart thresholds.
Trends supports Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly, 5 Year, and 10 Year views. Longer views group nights into larger chart buckets while retaining each tracked night’s contribution to debt.
Health access and deletion
Somnus reads Sleep Analysis only. It does not write to Apple Health and does not upload Health data.
You can withdraw access in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Somnus. Deleting the app removes locally stored Somnus preferences; your original sleep records remain in Apple Health under your control.
